Tom Hayden

Tom Hayden (December 11, 1939 – October 23, 2016) co-founded Students for a Democratic Society (the SDS) in the 1960s. He was married to Jane Fonda for 17 years and later in 1992 became a state senator in California. Hayden was one of four principal initiators of the Progressives for Obama movement.

Hayden is the author of the Port Huron Statement.

Foreign support for violent subversive activities in the United States[edit]

In 1970, the House Committee on Internal Security reproduced a June 4, 1968, letter that Hayden had sent to a North Vietnam official by the name of "Col. Lao" informing him that a "Mr. Robert Greenblatt" was the coordinator of the National Mobilization to End the War in Vietnam and that he "works closely with myself and Dave Dellinger, and has just returned from Hanoi." The letter from Hayden was signed, "Good fortune! Victory!"^[1]

In the words of the chairman, Rep. Richard H. Ichord, the report identified how the New Mobilization Committee had "operated from its inception with significant domestic and international communist support."^[2]

The report said that a "large percentage" of the delegates to the founding conference of the New Mobilization Committee were "members of the Communist Party USA; the Trotskyist communist Socialist Workers Party; the Young Socialist Alliance, youth and training section of the SWP; and the Student Mobilization Committee to end the War in Vietnam, an organization controlled by the YSA."
