On January 6, 2021 the "Save America March" took place in Washington D.C. The event started with a Stop the Steal rally[1] that included opening prayers, reading of the Lord's Prayer, reciting of the Pledge of Allegiance, and singing of the National Anthem, as well as speeches delivered by President Trump, Donald Trump Jr., Rudy Giuliani, several members of Congress, and many others. It was reported that thousands of people attended the rally, while the National Park Service Permit specified only 30,000 people were permitted.[2] Described as a "Sea of Patriots", it was later estimated that "Half a Million to a Million" Trump supporters attended the rally.[3] However, District of Columbia authorities took no precautionary security measures, despite being warned about anticipated potential for large pro-Trump attendance and that violent extremists had planned to infiltrate the march and were planning an attack.
As reported by the Washington Post, on Monday January 4, 2021 Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund was growing increasingly worried about the size of the pro-Trump crowds expected to stream into Washington, D.C. to attend the rally and march. Sund asked House and Senate security officials for permission to request that the D.C. National Guard be placed on standby for quick backup. Sund said they turned him down.[4] D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser and Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi both turned down a standby deployment of thousands of National Guard troops in support of the Capitol Police for the January 6, 2021 rally and march. The Director of the F.B.I. Christopher Wray reportedly refused to communicate with the Trump Administration, in the leadup to the scheduled rally and march, to warn them that provocateurs were planning to invoke chaos, that they thought there might be some kind of situation brewing, or that "there could be a situation." Instead, the F.B.I. recruited for people to infiltrate the crowd.[5][6][7]
On January 6, 2021, prior to the days events, President Trump had posted on Twitter:
“ | "States want to correct their votes, which they now know were based on irregularities and fraud, plus corrupt process never received legislative approval. All Mike Pence has to do is send them back to the States, AND WE WIN. Do it Mike, this is a time for extreme courage!"[8] | ” |
During the ongoing rally, as the President spoke, the event was infiltrated by Left-wing insurrectionists that led a pre-planned breach of security on the U.S. Capitol building.[9] Known Antifa members were spotted among the growing pro-Trump crowd gathered at the Capitol. Reportedly, they disguised themselves wearing pro-Trump clothing to infiltrate the crowd, to join in the planned 2021 Capitol protestsing.[10][11] Lisa Fithian, a long-time Democrat terror organizer and trainer including stints with Occupy Wall Street, the Obama Ferguson Riots and various unions, said In the Zoom chat describing tools and tactics of the post election ShutDownDC operation:
“ | "Whoever’s got the guns can win – let’s take over the buildings! We are going to be in a crisis but we want it to be one that we are creating. We want to make sure that we are on the offense and not the defense. We want them to be responding to us and not us responding to them."[12] | ” |
While President Trump was addressing a crowd of peaceful protesters on The Ellipse located within the National Mall, a mile and half away from the Capitol building, and stressing the need for a peaceful assembly,[13] Antifa terrorists were transported into the midst of a small group assembled outside the U.S. Capitol.[14][15] The U.S. Capitol Police lifted the crowd barriers, removed barricades from around the building, let everyone gather in[16] and allowed everyone to assemble on and near the Capitol steps. Some in the gathering crowd then started to attack the Police barrier lines at the Capitol steps and began assaulting the police. More than two dozen Antifa members who later admitted to having been paid to infiltrate the crowd of Trump supporters,[17] stormed the Capitol building and broke windows, to gain access to the interior of the Capitol building.[18][19][20]
Uniformed U.S. Capitol Police Officers opened the doors and stood idly by, allowing the rioters and gathered Trump supporters into the Capitol building.[21] Video footage shows that once inside, Trump supporters posed with the police officers and took selfie photographs.[22]
During the President's speech at the Stop the Steal rally, President Trump encouraged the attendees to walk down Pennsylvania Avenue to the Capitol to "peacefully and patriotically[23] make your voices heard" and to "try and give our Republicans... the weak ones, the kind of pride and boldness that they need to take back our country" as the 2020 Presidential election Electoral College vote was being tabulated and confirmed by members of the 117th U.S. Congress and Vice President Mike Pence.[24] Following the march, many rally attendees gathered at the Capitol and chanted: "We want Trump!"[25]
Former White House chief of staff Mark Meadows revealed that President Trump offered to deploy 10,000 National Guard troops in Washington D.C. prior to the event on January 6, 2021, but his offer was rebuked. Meadows indicated, "That was a direct order" from President Trump.[26] Pentagon officials said the Capitol Police did not request D.C. National Guard ahead of the protest.[27]
Later, it was revealed that the Capitol riot was not a spontaneous reaction to President Trump's speech, as was initially alleged. The FBI stated that it had evidence days and weeks in advance of a pre-planned attack and had notified Capitol Hill leaders.[28] Pipe bombs were found staged within Washington D.C., that the FBI said were placed at the RNC and DNC Headquarters prior to the day of the event.[29] The FBI and ATF offered a reward of up to $100,000 for information leading to the location, arrest, and conviction of the person(s) responsible for the placement of pipe bombs in Washington, D.C., on January 5, 2021.[30]
Contrary to accusations otherwise, President Trump did not incite an insurrection.[31][32][33] President Trump used the words "fight like hell" during the rally, in reference to his team’s legal efforts around election integrity. Democrats alleged that Trump used the words to incite his followers to commit violence.[34]
The FBI later admitted it had received information ahead of the "Jan. 6 tragedy", suggesting some participants had planed a "war" on the Capitol, that included killing officers and distributing maps of the complex. The New York Police Department was reported to have given the Capitol Police similar intelligence warnings of impending violence. A senior Trump intelligence official indicated he had found no evidence that the President, the White House or the National Security Council was alerted of formal intelligence briefings to the pre-warnings or suspicions of violence the F.B.I. and N.Y.P.D. have admitted they had.[35]
It was reported that, Mayor Bowser, Nancy Pelosi, and Christopher Wray provably allowed the chaos to ensue, in order to project a wanted political outcome, which then promoted an anti-Trump narrative. It was indicated, these public officials willingly endangered members of Congress and Vice President Mike Pence and allowed the so-called "1/6 Insurrection" to take place, in order to promote chaos and to "get rid of Trump".[36]
