Chinese Apologist

The authoritarian, communist government of China has become increasingly repressive and censorious, banning South Park^[1] and PewDiePie^[2] in 2019. However, some in the West have bent the knee to China. These people are called Chinese apologists.

When Daryl Morey posted a tweet in support of the pro-democracy freedom fighters in Hong Kong, the National Basketball Association apologized on his behalf.^[3] The gaming company Activision Blizzard penalized the champion of their Hearthstone gaming competition, confiscating his prize money and revoking his status as champion, after he expressed support for Hong Kong,^[4] and three attendees of a Blizzard tournament who sympathized with him were banned for holding up a sign which read, "Free Hong Kong, boycott Blizz[ard]."^[5]

Trey Parker and Matt Stone of South Park, after their series was banned in China, parodied the NBA in a tweet which read, "Like the NBA, we welcome the Chinese censors into our homes and into our hearts. We too love money more than freedom and democracy....Long live the Great Communist Party of China!...We good now, China?”^[6] In their next episode, a character shouted, "F*** the Chinese government!"^[7][8]

Walmart and Google, which have major dealings with China,^[9][10] with Google even manipulating search results so that they are more pro-Chinese,^[11] campaigned against the tariffs against the regime implemented by the administration of U.S. President Donald John Trump.^[12][13]

In Congress, the CEOs of Google, Apple, and Amazon refused to explicitly condemn China.^[14]
